Founded in 1984 by a small group of Oregon hazelnut growers who took advantage of a great economic opportunity to control their own destiny. Well known families with names like Kauer, Heesacker, Marrow, Vanderschuere, Peter, Koenig are still prominent hazelnut growers today. These growers purchased an existing hazelnut processing facility in Cornelius, Oregon, that was part of one of the largest agricultural cooperatives in the country, “Sun-Diamond Growers of California,” an amalgamation of five separate agricultural cooperatives; “Diamond Walnut Growers; Sun-Maid Growers of California; Sunsweet Growers; Valley Fig Growers and Hazelnut Growers of Oregon.”
After decades of change and consolidation, Hazelnut Growers of Oregon is independent, has grown larger and is recognized by its own global brands. Hazelnut Growers of Oregon is owned by 140 Oregon hazelnut grower families, raising hazelnuts from one end of the Willamette Valley in Oregon to the other. The Willamette Valley in Western Oregon is world renown for producing great wine grapes and great wines and of course, Hazelnuts.
The “Co-op,” as it is referred to in the Oregon hazelnut business has a professional management team which receives critical direction from a grower-elected Board of Directors. All Directors are Oregon hazelnut growers.
The Co-op handles approximately 30% of all Oregon hazelnuts produced each year. The Company has enjoyed steady growth in hazelnut tonnage and leverages a consistent and large volume to maintain a strong and positive market influence for Oregon hazelnuts worldwide.
The Co-op produces numerous hazelnut food products including: hazelnut butter, sweet hazelnut paste; dry roasted hazelnut kernels, sliced hazelnuts, diced hazelnuts, non-roasted natural hazelnut kernels and the most important product, In-shell hazelnuts direct from the orchard.
Hazelnut Growers of Oregon sells Oregon hazelnut products domestically and all over the world to small bakeries and restaurants as well as to large industrial food processing and chocolate confection companies. In-shell hazelnuts are sold to China, Europe and South America as well as to large domestic nut companies who distribute throughout the Midwestern and Eastern regions of the United States.
